What is a mini tummy tuck?
The mini tummy tuck is a reduced version of the abdominoplasty, and the differences are not of degree but of scope:
- A shorter scar than a full abdominoplasty, sitting equally low and hidden by underwear.
- The navel is not moved. There is no incision around it and therefore no periumbilical scar.
- Only the skin and fat BELOW the navel are treated. Nothing above it is lifted or removed.
- Muscle repair, if any, is limited to the infraumbilical portion of the abdominal wall.
- A shorter recovery than a full abdominoplasty.
🔴 The honest conversation: you are probably not a candidate
This has to be said before anything else, because it decides whether the surgery will work or disappoint you. Most people who seek a mini tummy tuck are not candidates for one — they seek it because it sounds smaller, cheaper and less intimidating than the full operation. And that is the wrong reason.
The mini tummy tuck does NOT do these things:
- It does not repair diastasis above the navel. And that is precisely where pregnancy separates the rectus muscles. If your abdomen bulges outward even when you are slim, a mini will not correct it: the problem is in the upper muscular wall, beyond its reach.
- It does not remove skin above the navel. If you have excess skin there —usual after pregnancy or significant weight loss— it will still be there after surgery.
- It does not raise the navel. If the navel has descended or become distorted, it stays as it is.
So who IS a candidate for a mini?
The profile is narrow and it is worth acknowledging honestly:
- A small excess of skin confined below the navel — the classic lower "pinch", and nothing more.
- An intact muscular wall above the navel, or minimal diastasis limited to the lower portion.
- Stable weight, close to ideal.
- Frequently: women without pregnancies, or patients after moderate weight loss, whose upper skin retains good quality.
- If you have had one or more pregnancies, what you most likely need is a full abdominoplasty, or a Mommy Makeover. We will tell you that at the consultation, even if you came asking for a mini.
Why we would rather lose the sale
Because a mini tummy tuck performed on the wrong patient is surgery that does not solve the reason she had surgery. She has been through the operating room, the anaesthesia, the recovery and the expense — and her abdomen still bulges, because the upper diastasis was never touched. A second operation is then needed, this time the full one, with its own scar and its own recovery.
It is cheaper, faster and less painful to do the right operation the first time. That is the entire reason this page is written the way it is.
How is it performed?
It is performed under general anaesthesia or sedation with local anaesthesia, depending on the case, in a hospital operating room. It lasts approximately 1.5 to 3 hours — less than a full abdominoplasty. The infraumbilical excess skin is removed, the lower muscular wall repaired if indicated, and closure leaves a short, low horizontal scar. Liposuction of the flanks is frequently associated to refine the contour.

Yes, and it frequently is: associated liposuction of the flanks and waist refines the transition and improves the silhouette, because removing skin from the front without working the sides leaves a flat abdomen with no curve.
