Before starting: every protocol is individual
The timelines in this guide correspond to a typical multi-area liposuction or liposculpture. Your specific protocol — garment, drains, visits, therapies — is defined by Dr. Arístides Arellano according to the areas treated, the volume removed and your progress. Timelines may vary from person to person.
Week 1: swelling, the garment, and relative rest
The first days feel more like intense muscle soreness than sharp pain. The treated area will be swollen and bruised, with blood-tinged fluid leaking from the incisions for the first 24–48 hours — expected, and part of the process.
- Garment: worn from the operating room, practically continuously, removed only for hygiene as indicated.
- Movement: relative rest, not absolute. Walking indoors from day one lowers thrombosis risk.
- Work: most desk jobs resume between day 5 and 10, depending on treated areas.
- Warning signs: fever, pain that increases instead of decreasing, or a hot, red, tense area warrant contacting your surgeon immediately.
Week 2: you look worse before you look better
This is the psychologically hardest week: bruises migrate and change color, swelling may seem greater than week one in some areas, and scale weight can rise from fluid retention. None of this means the surgery "didn’t work."
This is usually when manual lymphatic drainage starts, helping evacuate inflammatory fluid more efficiently. Numbness or tingling in the treated skin is normal and recovers progressively.
Weeks 3–4: the contour starts to show
Bruising has practically disappeared and swelling visibly drops. Many patients resume light cardio (brisk walking, gentle stationary bike) with their surgeon’s clearance.
This stage’s silent protagonist may also appear: fibrosis — firm, lumpy or "cardboard-like" areas under the skin. Some internal hardening is a normal part of healing; the goal of drainage, a well-fitted garment and, when indicated, complementary treatments, is for it to resolve evenly without leaving irregularities.
Weeks 5–8: normal life, result under construction
Most patients are fully back to normal life, including progressive strength training. The garment usually moves to partial use (for example, daytime only) as indicated, until completing your protocol’s total time.
The contour is already clearly visible, though the skin keeps settling and fibrosis areas continue softening month by month.
Months 3–6: the definitive result
Between the third and sixth month, deep residual swelling finishes resolving and the skin completes its retraction. This is the right moment to assess the final result — and for comparison photos.
Keeping the result is up to you: liposuction permanently removes fat cells from treated areas, but the ones remaining elsewhere can enlarge with significant weight gain. Diet and exercise are the result’s maintenance plan.
If your case included HD liposculpture or extensive areas, your timeline may differ: review it at your consultation. Reference prices are on the price list.
Frequently asked questions
How many weeks is the compression garment worn after liposuction?
The usual scheme runs 4 to 8 weeks in total: a first phase of continuous wear and a second of partial wear. The exact time is set by your surgeon based on treated areas, volume removed and how your skin evolves. Stopping early is one of the most common causes of avoidable irregularities.
When does liposuction swelling fully disappear?
Visible swelling drops substantially between weeks three and four, but deep residual swelling takes 3 to 6 months to fully resolve. That is why the definitive result is assessed only then. Timelines may vary per patient.
What is post-liposuction fibrosis and how is it prevented?
It is tissue hardening under the skin during internal healing: firm, lumpy or cardboard-like areas. Some degree is normal and transient. Even resolution is helped by a well-fitted garment, lymphatic drainage started on time and, when indicated, complementary therapies like those described in the practice’s post-surgical protocol.
When can I go back to the gym after liposuction?
Light cardio is usually cleared around week three or four, and progressive strength training between weeks four and eight, depending on treated areas and progress. Clearance always comes from your surgeon at follow-up visits, not from the calendar.
Is it normal for the skin to feel numb or tingly?
Yes. Cannulas cross planes where small sensory nerve branches run, and their function recovers gradually over weeks to months. Tingling is usually the very sign that sensation is returning.
Why did I gain weight after liposuction?
In the first two weeks it is fluid retention from swelling plus the procedure’s fluids — not new fat. The scale is a poor judge at this stage; photos and measurements tell the real story. Weight normalizes as swelling resolves.
